Jim Ousley: Writing for a Halloween Night

Writing for a Halloween Night

Comics writer Jim Ousley and I first crossed paths when his graphic novel with Tyler Ruff The Atonement Bell received an Eisner nomination. The book deserved the accolades, and we stayed in touch after that year’s Comic-Con. In addition to The Atonement Bell, Jim collaborated with his long-time friend and artist Ben Sawyer on two volumes of Butcher Queen: Black Star City and Planet of the Dead. All 3 are published by Red 5 Comics, which also just released the omnibus of Drew Edwards’ early Halloween Man tales.

I read Black Star City over the 4th of July weekend, and the sci-fi tale of a bounty hunter striving to rescue refugee aliens from abusive humans hit pretty hard. When we met up at Comic-Con later that month, I said we had to have a conversation. Then Jim told me he had a story in the upcoming Tales for a HalloweeNight vol. 11 from Storm King Comics. As a fan of the anthology, I told him it was definitely time for an interview.

We chatted last week and I have to find a copy of the anthology because his story sounds terrific.
